The single biggest difference between a Glendale summer move and a winter move is not the heat index on the truck thermometer — it is the chain of small protocol decisions that start the night before.
From May through October the Northwest Phoenix Valley runs 110F-plus afternoons under cloudless sun, asphalt that softens enough to leave a dolly mark by noon, and a monsoon-dust window that can shut down I-10 west of Buckeye. Dale Whitford wrote the ACE dawn-load protocol in 2018 after one too many afternoon loads ended with melted plastic on a sofa wrap.
The Pre-7am Start
From May 1 through October 15, every ACE Movers load that can start at dawn does. We pull out of the W Glendale Avenue yard between 5:30 and 6:15 in the morning and aim to be on the customer’s driveway with the ramp down before 6:45. The goal: have the heaviest 70% of the load on the truck before the asphalt thermometer crosses 95F, usually around 9:30am in July.

Why the Heat Curve Matters
The interior of a parked moving truck in a Glendale July driveway crosses 140F by 11:00am and peaks around 165F by 2:00pm. Upholstery glue softens at 130F. Leather creases under shrink-wrap at 145F. The A/C-Only Transit Rule
Every ACE truck in the fleet runs cab A/C plus a forward-bulkhead box A/C on summer routes. The forward 8 linear feet of the box stays under 95F all day — that is where electronics, leather, candles, and art ride.
The back of the box runs hot but everything in it is wrapped, padded, and shielded. We do not roll without both systems running — if a forward-box A/C fails on the pre-trip, the truck stays in the yard and Maggie swaps in a backup.
UV-Rated Sealed-Bag Wrap
The standard shrink wrap most movers use is a 60-gauge stretch film that yellows and grows brittle after four hours under Arizona summer sun. Ours is a UV-rated 80-gauge sealed-bag film with a reflective additive, run on every load from May through October. It costs more per roll. It is included in the flat figure at no add. Monsoon-Dust Season
The Arizona monsoon runs July through September. The afternoon convection storms move from the Tonto National Forest down through Buckeye and Goodyear in 90-minute windows and can shut down I-10 with a brown-out wall. Below is how the protocol shifts during monsoon weeks.
Dust-shrink double-pass
Outdoor furniture, bicycles, and exterior items get a second shrink pass with the same UV film. Dust ingress drops to near zero.
I-10 west avoidance
Long-distance routes to San Diego and AZ leave by 4:30am on monsoon days. We are past the Buckeye wedge before the convection builds.
Loop 101 dawn window
Westside-to-Westside loads use Loop 101 northbound and the Loop 303 western perimeter before the morning rush. No surface-street Bell Road in monsoon afternoons.
Brown-out hold
If the dust wall is on radar, the truck holds at the closest shaded staging area, not on a shoulder. Carl makes the call from dispatch.
The No-Asphalt-Burn Rule
By 11:00am in July, the asphalt in a Glendale driveway hits surface temperatures over 165F. A dolly wheel softens and leaves a black scuff; a metal furniture pad clip can sink a quarter-inch into the surface and leave a pock when lifted.
The ACE protocol: every load over a softening driveway runs on Masonite runners or plywood walk-boards. That is included in the flat figure. The runner protects your asphalt and our crew’s footing — we have lost two pairs of boot soles to the noon driveway.
Loop 101 Dawn Windows
The Loop 101 west and north arcs from the I-10 split through Glendale and up to Sun City run roughly 22 miles around the Northwest Valley. Between 5:30am and 7:45am they move at full posted speed; after 7:45 they tighten quickly.

The summer dawn-load protocol does not raise your hourly figure. The $169-per-hour rate is the same May 1 as it is on December 1. What to do the night before a summer load: Move temperature-sensitive items (candles, electronics in original boxes, photos) to a single A/C-cooled room. The 2026 Booking Reality
Summer dates in the Northwest Valley book differently from spring and fall. May and June fill earliest (school-out timing), July is the easiest month to book inside two weeks, August fills around the Luke AFB rotation calendar, and September runs heavy on snowbird-prep storage drops.
